What Era Do You Wish You Had Lived In?

The New York Times is publishing very interesting questions on various topics addressed to young people. I thought it would be nice to answer the same questions and then maybe compare your comments with what American students wrote on the topic.

Question:

Tell us which historical eras interest you most and why. Which would you like to visit or live in? What historical events or movements would you want to experience firsthand? Do you find life today “boring” compared to some past time periods?

You can start by reading this article http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/17/us/17grads.html

  1. ...There are a lot of periods in the history that I would like to visit! But if I would have the chance to choose only a period I think I would choose the Renaissance. It would be nice to try to be the wife of a Maecenas and to be sorrounded by a lot of artists and musicians...
Another interesting period was the Enlightenment and I would like to partecipate to a gathering in a coffee house!

  2. Hmmm in my opinion the modern era which we're living in, is quite cool with all gadgets and stuff. However I would really like to go back in time just to experience true 60's, 70's & 80's which featured great music, concerts of the most influent bands of that time, films and the "american atmosphere".
By the way, I think the way people used to live 30-40 years ago was way more interesting than ours. The less gadgets and technological entertainment people had, the more they were ushed to look for an alternative which the could enjoy!

  3. I agree with Patrick, I think the most interesting period for Italy was the economic boom in 50's,60's,70's in which our singer and actors were extremely important all over the world (example Mina or Sophia Loren)and people had lots of work's opportunities after the horrible period of the world's wars

  5. I would want to live during the 60′s and 70′s, in revolutionary times, expecially for the fundamental and modern women’s rights!

  6. I agree with my classmates when they say that life 40 years ago was much more interesting.. there was such a cool atmosphere!
By the way also Reinassance or Enlightment would be very fascinating periodto live in. It would be nice to take part to a reunion of the Blue Stockings Society and meet people that would revolutionize the world's thoughts!

  7. I think (as Gaia and Patrick) that the most interesting era for us was the boom in 60's and 70's in which there were the most important and famous singer and actors, where the horrible time of world war was ended and people could express themselves.Maybe can be useful to live for a little period in time of world war to see how was difficult lo live in that period and to appreciate more what we have now...

  8. I like the era in which I live: there are all the things that I want and that I need.
I would like also to live during the 60's 70's and 80's because it was a very interesting period in many fields. But I think that the most intresting field was the one of music, because still today we remind and copy the arists of that time!

  9. I think that if I'd have to choose and go back in time I'd choose the Eighteen Century, the time of ladies and knights, court balls, royal palaces etc., because in my opinion this was one of the most fascinating era of all times.

  10. If I could, I would like to visit the Renaissance, and in particular Florence during that period. I like this historical era because, during it, the art fluorished. I would like to meet people like Leonardo da Vinci and Machiavelli and visit the court of the De Medici, wich was full of artists and writers.

Actually, I don't think life today is so bad: I like this period, even if there are many problems and crisis, because I think that, in history, there are always such problems: what is important is to face them and not let them ruin our lives, but always to look for the positive aspects of our life and of our era. I addition, I think that our era offers us many comforts that people in the past did not have.

  11. I wuold like to live in the 1800 and in particular in England because I would like to live like in a Jane Austen's novel. I like the long dresses, the balls, the one or more days of travelling to arrive at the nearest city....
I think that nowadays life in not boring but maybe there are less big moments to pass together; I mean for example the balls where all the people know how to dance,...

  12. I agree with Pat ang Gaia, I have always loved 60's or 70's because those periods were full of changes ahd hopes. Finally, the people had the possibility to express themselves thanks to the music and peace demonstrations, like Woodstock. Women were starting to play important roles in the society but also in the political life; people, were becoming more open - minded.
I do not like this era only for its music, its singers and its atmosphere, but also because the youth was more active, happier and especially more hopeful than us!

  13. I'd like to go back and live during 60's and 70's,which were two very lively and eventful decades. It'd be great to experience the life of the young generation and understand their feelings and what drove them to rebel against the society. They were brave enough to change what they didn't like, they felt free!
And of course I'd choose that time for the music, during that period the greatest musicians were on stage and i could have the possibility to go to the many concerts.

I would also like to have a look in the future, first of all to check if there'll be a future or if the human race will extinguish! And to see what will the life be like, how the use of technoligy changed and so on.

  14. Actually it is a bit difficult to choose the best history era but I think it would have been interesting to live after the 2nd world war. This was a period of great ideals and innovations. The people knew that they had to change their way of life. In fact in these years the Italian Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were written. I suppose, that the protagonists of this history era were strongly convinced that they would have been able to make the world a better place for all!! I think that we have to take their enthusism as an example to change our modern era, wich has to face really big issues.

  15. the question is quite difficult. In my opinion is our era one of the most confortable eras in history. We have all we need and all we want. Unfortunately this is not always a good point, because people aren't able to be happy, they always want more that they have. If i had to choose a period to explore, I would choose the Renaissance, in particular in Florence, there was a cool atmosphere in my opinion.

  16. There are lots of history Era I would like to live in, for example during the Age of reason,or before and after the WWII or during the Renaissance..but probably the most different and interesting periond to visit is the Ancient world: egyptians, greeks ,fenicians and romans.
Life was simpler, there weren't technological gadgets, cities were more beautiful and the men were brave and full of morals. Most of all the landscape was unpolluted.

  17. I have always wondered how life was like at the time of dinosaurs because I would really like to own a little one of them even if I know that it would be really dangerous. So I would not really make this choice.
Then I have always dreamt to be a princess like Anastasia or Marie Antoniette because I love their dresses and their ballets but I could not sustain such a life for more than a week because I could not know what to do. In fact in those times there were no technologies and unfortunately I am too used to use them.
So maybe I would rather live in the 20s, at the time of Audrey Hepburn, when women were so elegant, kind and womanly whereas now most of them are damaged by piercings and tattoos.

  18. In my opinion today's era is not bad. Like Valentina said before, we have all what we want and I think we're very very lucky.
Despite that, we always want more and more and often we are not sutisfied of our life.
If I had the opportunity to go back in time I'd choose 60's, 70's and 80's because in those periods there was good music and artists, people could express themselves and I also like the way, different from now, people dressed.

  19. is not easy to answer this question personally I would like to exeperience all the different past time periods to understand what life was really about.
The only thing I know is that it will be amazing to be part of a travel that helped discovering the world that we live in.It will be grateful.

  20. I would like to live in an era where there would be no cars, no pollution and no stress. I would like to live in the Renaissance, for example, in a big castel where a could wear wonderful dresses at evening. I would like to have time to ride my horse and time to read too.
Another era in which I would like to live is the Enlightenment, when new ideas about society and government began to arise.
I thing the life today is not boring because we have lots of opportunities to have fun and to do experiences; however today there are much more stress than in the past, bacause we want to do more things we can really do.

  21. I agree that today life brings much more stress than in the past. But is also because technology is increasing and people expect much more quality in their lives. Of course this doesn't mean that today life is boring, maybe it's only much harder than in the past or the difficulties are just changed, not increased... Personally I always loved the Middle Age and most of all the beautiful architecture of British castles. I would like to experience how was life like at that time...
