THe idea of creation by artificial means has great contemporary relevance for our society. What do you think the limits (if any) should be to genetic manipulation and experiment?
In my opinion the genetic's progress has brought great results and opportunities that are very useful to cure diseases that otherwise were not be cured, that are useful for women that genetically or cause of some problems can't have children.
But I think there must be some limits: I don't agree with the creation of life (both of animals and of humans) completely in the lab because it's seemed to me unnatural.. If it were in this way, create everything in a lab, it would be an horrible world to me where there wouldn't much more oneness and personality.
I personally think genetics engineering represents a revolution in today's world!
In fact it can protect animals against extinction and humans against a lot of diseases.
On the other side,it brings lots of disadvantages as well. If not correctly used, genetics could increase the risk of upgrading a more dangerous diseases, face incidents in creating human clones and other abnormal situations like doping and then some...
For these reasons I strongly believe that genetics engeenering should be limited until the mankind has finally thought about its consequences.
In my opinion genetic's progresses are very useful and interesting. By studying and creating things we have the possibility to save people's life, give them a new chance to walk, breath and maybe see. It is something amazing and wonderful because even if this branch of science is still something quite unknown, the human has already developed several prosthesis and also genetic manipulations like reproductions of many organs. But I think that these reproductions of organs are something strange and gruesome, in fact I cannot imagine how it would be like to live with a leg of another man, I would rather ask for a prosthesis made with iron. I guess that artificial parts of the body are a really great invention. I like them also because I prefer to know that someone has an artificial kidney rather than mine, I could never give a part of me to someone else. In addiction, nowadays, biologists are studying how to create real humans and animals with artificial methods, I consider it disgusting! Maybe it is not so bad but I'm against any attempt of cloning or creating someone because when I was a child I watched a movie where people cloned animals and it was horrible because this new creatures were not so friendly and lovely as the original ones so I was frightened it would happened in the real life. In addition I would consider surgery as a genetic manipulation, in fact you change yourself and in most cases people do it not for health's problems but for beauty. I think everyone can do what he or she wants but I would not change most of my body only to be beautiful, I rather consider surgery as a kind of care's method. In conclusion I would say that like everything also genetic, artificial life and surgery have its positive but also negative sides and therefore we cannot say if it is something right or wrong, we only have to improve them and try to use them in the best way we can.
Changes usually bring new and better things, evolutions in nature are in fact something natural, needed by the planet, but when they are forced our Earth is put in danger. Taking about genetics, I believe that genetic experiments and progresses have been useful and they will always be, studying and creating new ways to observe phenomenon in lab is something really amazing because it offers even the possibility of saving lives, or changing to the better. The use of genetics, though, is sometimes manipulated and adapted in the wrong way. I think, for example, that if a species is disappearing is because of a natural selection. If humans don't want it to happen, they have to think about why the species is dying out, so what they did wrong to make it extinguish. If we can resolve the problem from the bases we wouldn’t have to think how to modify the planet genetically. I think that restrictions are needed because the Earth is ruled by nature not by human power, even though humans mostly think it differently.
Just a few days ago I've read on the newspaper about the possibility, in the future, to eat artificial meat, reducing drastically in this way the presence of breedings and their impact on the environment. But when I hear about the conditions of animals in laboratories, put in cages just to be the next victim of another failed, painful experiment, it's a moral obligation ask ourselves which is the limit point for progress. I think that we can call a discover "progress" when it didn't mean demotion on the moral side. Actually, it's quite impossible to reach results without any sacrifice, but we could limit them by focusing the attention on branches of science already discovered that are only waiting for freedom from prejudice. For example, the use of stem cells. Once I was against the use of stem cells, believing that we could take them only from embryos and fetus, but it's not true. There are many places in our body where we can find them. Plus, every time a baby born, we could take them from the blood of the umbilical cord, giving a new life to a second person. Indeed, I think that, with a proper resource, they could allow a lot of people in wheelchair to walk again (and many other things now still unthinkable). I'm not saying we should play beeing God, but use the life God or whatever gave us to create what could help life.
I think that genetic manipulation and experiment has both positives and negatives aspects. If we are able to modify the genetic structure of our genes in order to avoid hereditary diseases, malformations, physical problems, it is positive, BUT if we clone an animal, a plant or even worse a human being only to create a perfect specie without defects, to increase the crop, it is not fair because it is unnatural. In nature we are all different, with our character, personality, values and faults and these are what make our world beautiful. Than to create something in the laboratory we use chemicals and if we eat an artificial product, we have negatives effects on our health. In conclusion I think that our Earth is ruled by nature and not by human power, so we have to respect it and not to challenge it trying to modify the natural structure of things, because if the nature revolts, we don’t know what it will happen.
When we talk about “manipulation” we mean a sort of control of something, an abuse or exploitment. This could be a very strong thing to say about a very precious gift we have, such as life. But that's the point: manipulation exists and its also a widespread “activity”, if it could be defined so. Many people think that making a copy of something is an offence, but they don't mind about the fact that every people make a copy of something every day. The simplest thing that is subject to cloning are our cells. When we hurt or just a cell dies, there is an other that is ready to take it's place. But not only; today, the famous descovered “stem cells” are not only present in our body to replace other cells but also they are extracted for artificial procreation. So this, in my opinion, is not manipulation but progress. When we instead talk about exploitment and with this we mean that people who import thousands of monkeys only to inject them a liquid that destroys their brain cells; so this is manipulation. On one hand artificial life could be a form of progress for our society but on the other hand it could be a regress for the life of animals and plants. For me, the limit is: when a scientist make an experiment, he should use that sort of material that doesn't imply the death of other lives, even if it will produce a huge amount of other lives. I say this also because I think that everything happens for a specific reason and if it's written somewhere that for example monkeys should die wether naturally or eaten by an other animal, why a human should stop this phenomenon and decide the destiny of an other life ?
Genetic manipulation is a very hot topic nowadays and, like everything, it has its positive and negative sides.
I think that genetic research can both hurt and help: talking about the negative sides, its impact can really hurt animals which are used for experiments in laboratories but on the other side it can really help people who suffer from many diseases: it can change their life!
Like for everything in our life and in our world, we should be able to find a balance, to take the right choice between good and bad.
In my opinion, the worst thing to do in this case is to exaggerate: I think it is good to use genetics in order to help ill people, but not to change the NATURE of people. Going against the natural course of nature we really risk to destroy our world: super men or super women created genetically changing their DNA would push our society to pass the limit between creature and creator because we would pass from the first situation to the second.
In order to avoid this risk we have to state rules and limits and especially to follow ethics, because everything, even when if used correctly it could really help people, can become something bad with the possibility of ruining us and our society if we, instead of following the "right thing" we prefer the "bad but BIG thing".
Trying to discover something new that can improve human life has always been a purpose for humankind; even though it means to sacrifice animals or other people. I don't think there is a limit in nowadays experiments and personally I don't know if it is right to put a limit, because through experiments scientists can improve the life condition of people who have problems. Besides I think there are any limit to experiments: we don't exactly know, but we could be part of an experiment, who knows? Talking about genetical manipulation, I think, even though I know that all the experiments made to discover something taht allows people to live more are something suggesting, that there is a reason if we have only one life; the idea of clonating people and eternal life are only an utopia. I don't share them and I think it is all due to the fear people have of the death and the fact they don't know what happens after it.
Artificial life sounds like an awesome idea, in a perfect world in which we can create a taller, smarter, stronger and better looking person.. but we don't live in a perfect world, so I don't think it could really be a great idea: because many things could go wrong.
I agrre with artifcial life because we live in a world where even in this moment a lot of people die of the most strange diseases, replace the humanity with artificial life is a future that is going to be reality very soon
In my opinion artificial life is a great innovation in our society. It could help a lot of people, also in many employment sectors. It could change the way of life of many persons but genetic manipolations and experiments aren't so a good idea becouse many types of animals were sacrificed and tortured only for the interest of the man. Contrarily this experiments in the labs could help humanity to discover new medical innovations for the future.
I'm still doubtful about artificial life, because I think it's doublefaced: on one hand with this new technology we can save human lives, eradicate many diseases and so improve our life; but on the other side it can be extremely dangerous going against nature, so by creating new living beings, it would be for sure something wrong. In the end I'm the opinion of that we should go easy on experiments, and so on, asking ourselves if we are doing the right or not, cause nature could rebel against us.
